The ongoing installation of mosaics in the Persian Pool is a sight to behold. The design elegantly mixes stylized whirlpools that are Art Nouveau in character with colorful, intricately detailed sea creatures. I have often said that Samuel Untermyer’s swimming pool was one of the two greatest in America—the other being at Hearst Castle in California—and it will soon be true again.

The southwest quadrant of the garden at the lower switchback of the carriage trail will feature a stumpery, tree stumps with protruding roots arranged artfully beside native ferns, woodland plants, and rocky cairns. We have now collected about 125 tree stumps for this purpose. It is a big project that will take a number of years to complete; the first step is to clear the area and begin to lay out winding paths that will connect to the existing network of paths and the switchback fountain. Our high school interns have begun constructing the paths, which is exciting to see.
With autumn at hand, we are happy to again present Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. There will be all kinds of activities for children, including a magic show in the amphitheater, kite flying on the great lawn, and hay rides along the carriage trail down to the aqueduct and through the woods. In addition, art projects and family adventure tours may be enjoyed.
