It was a joy to declare our first “snow day” after our recent six-inch snowfall. The garden looked magical, and a few inventive snowmen appeared, including one done in relief (it was a little too chilly to pack the snow easily).

Every once in a while I read about plans to install a “shade structure” at a public place. Why not plant a tree? Steel and canvas structures do nothing for the environment, and given global warming, we need to plant as many trees as possible. Stay tuned for more tree-planting initiatives from the Conservancy.
Our year-end Annual Appeal was a resounding success. Thanks to the enthusiastic and generous support of our friends, 649 donors responded, up from 603 donors in 2020, and we raised over $203,000, up from $145,000. Many thanks to all of you who help fuel our remarkable progress.
When we did research on the garden in Samuel Untermyer’s day, we learned that what had been called in recent decades the Eagle’s Nest was originally named the Temple of Love, a more fitting and traditional description of this elegant temple and wrought-iron dome. Imagine our surprise when we recently discovered a photograph of this area from the 1930s with a statue of an eagle! Perhaps the later nickname arose from its brooding presence.

Even in midwinter, construction progresses unabated. The lower switchback fountain in the southwest quadrant has had its new concrete shell, plumbing, pumphouse, and trenching completed. By spring there should be a lovely new water feature in this heretofore isolated spot, bringing the total number of distinctive water features in the garden to six—not counting the stunning Hudson River backdrop.
