Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens, Truckloads of potted tropical plants have emerged from the greenhouses to punctuate the landscape of the Walled Garden. Here they are waiting in line patiently before being placed throughout the garden. Check out the array of containers at the East Stoa, now with its wisteria in full bloom. Somehow they make the nearby monkey puzzle tree look more at home. In the first year of the Conservancy, this spot was fried by the afternoon sun and had no plants of interest and no seating---what a change has taken place! The lilacs have been putting on a fabulous show, enveloping their surroundings with ambrosial fragrance. Not to be outdone, the adjacent viburnums also pack a wallop. The Rock and Stream Garden has never looked better, with the plants now in their fourth year of growth. I love the purple and blue flowers closely juxtaposed; ditto for the hot pink and pale pink. Note the yellow theme played by the trees and shrubs, deciduous and evergreen. Certain eminent horticulturists have claimed that it is impossible for colors to clash in a flower garden, as nature has its own way of harmonizing. Would that human beings could do the same! Horticulture is not the only bounty the garden has to offer. Our Minnie Untermyer Concert Series will feature ten performances in the amphitheater from June through September. It kicks off with a Persian concert (Saturday, June 10), followed by German cabaret (Sunday, June 18) and modern classical dance (Friday, June 23). Tickets are available online. Here is Timothy Tilghman, describing the cool season plants now lining the canals in the Walled Garden and Ornamental Vegetable Garden. |
