Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
As the world slows down at this time of year, we are speeding up.
The mild fall has allowed us to make tremendous progress on the Temple of Love restoration. The trenching, pipes, and electrical work are nearly complete as I write this. The site is a mess, but it's a good kind of mess. We hope to have a "wet run" of the waterfall system before the new pipes are blown out for the winter. It will receive lots of fine tuning come spring.

The mild fall has allowed us to make tremendous progress on the Temple of Love restoration. The trenching, pipes, and electrical work are nearly complete as I write this. The site is a mess, but it's a good kind of mess. We hope to have a "wet run" of the waterfall system before the new pipes are blown out for the winter. It will receive lots of fine tuning come spring.
The garden has benefited from the efforts of several groups of volunteers. Hats off especially to the Cornell alumni and an Eagle Scout project with Boy Scout Troup #5 from Bronxville, which tackled the gargantuan task of clearing the area at the lower switchback of the carriage trail. What was impassable and visually clotted with downed trees and vines has been opened up, revealing a marvelous ruined circular fountain.
Preparing for our Grand Holiday Illumination, we have brought electricity to the south end of the Walled Garden for the first time in many decades. Our two main storage rooms will now have lights, so the gardeners will not have to find supplies with their cellphones' flashlights.
Indeed, the big news is our upcoming Illumination. A ceremony on Friday, December 11, at 6:00 pm will turn on the lights sequentially throughout the garden. We hope to have some fun with this, with various dignitaries present. The entire Walled Garden will be equipped with speakers offering beautiful music. Hot chocolate will be served. The garden will be open with sound and light every evening from 5:30 to 8:00 until January 3. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, various volunteer groups will serve hot chocolate.
