Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
At long last, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel for the restoration of the canals. Bedeviled by a hideous spring, we have had many delays, but we now feel confident that the water will be flowing and the fish will be swimming in a week or so. In the meantime, our poor aquatic plants have been stockpiled in a manmade swamp near the municipal greenhouse.

Unbowed, the Young Friends of Untermyer Gardens cosponsored The Great Forgotten Garden Party with Atlas Obscura on June 2. With 700 guests sprawled all over the garden, it was really a thrilling spectacle. It was also interesting to see how easily these vast garden spaces can accommodate a large crowd. I think that Samuel Untermyer would be pleased
While we are well short of Untermyer's crew of 60 full-time gardeners, we have seven crackerjack horticulturists now working in the soil. Their work ethic is impressive, and it is gratifying to see the daily fruits of their labor. I just love watching the large deliveries of plants get swallowed into the ground within days -- it's a kind of horticultural high!

I admit that I am sometimes a creature of habit, accustomed to seeing things a certain way. When I spied an aberrant pot in the center of the East Stoa in the Walled Garden, I thought that the gardeners had left it there temporarily before placing it with the other beautifully composed pot arrangements. I soon learned that our young gardener, Drew Schuyler, had placed it there as a kind of coffee table, a little exclamation point in the Stoa. There you go!

And a last reminder about our Summer Solstice Sunset Soirée on June 20th. It is a critical source of funds for the Conservancy, so please do come to this dramatic event or at least make a contribution at this time.
