We are about to embark on one of our largest projects to date, the restoration of the Four Rivers (Canals) of Paradise in the Walled Garden. All of this year's annuals will be removed when we drain the canals on September 25, but the perimeter of the garden will still look beautiful.
We are about to embark on one of our largest projects to date, the restoration of the Four Rivers (Canals) of Paradise in the Walled Garden. All of this year's annuals will be removed when we drain the canals on September 25, but the perimeter of the garden will still look beautiful.
The fish will return to their winter home in the municipal greenhouse.
The concrete canal bottoms will be opened up and new plumbing installed, followed by new concrete. All of the coping stones will be removed to allow for the introduction of a waterproof lining, followed by the reinstallation of the stones. Three bridges will be replaced. This massive project will take until mid-December, leaving just enough time, we hope, for us to install our Grand Holiday Illumination.
As a result of this effort, for the first time in 75 years our canals will be watertight, solving a problem that has contributed to the deterioration of the mosaics.
Fortunately, we can handle this significant expense, but it leaves us a bit challenged on other fronts. We plan to repeat our annual spectacular planting of tulips in the spring, but we could use a little help: 9,000 tulips cost about $3,000. Consider helping us fund this much-loved symbol of springtime, so enjoyed by thousands of people. (You can contribute here, online.)

On September 10, we once again celebrated Mehregan, the ancient secular Persian thanksgiving festival, in the Walled Garden. The world-famous musician Sattar performed, and we enjoyed what we call Persepolis-on-Hudson, a dramatic series of fire displays, including the burning of esphand.
