Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
With the summer now in full swing, I encourage you to visit Untermyer Gardens in all its glory. At the very center of the Walled Garden is a display of lotuses that is simply stupendous. The large and colorful blossoms speak eloquently to the garden’s Indo-Persian heritage, as the lotus is the national flower of India and the symbol of Anahita, the Persian goddess of water.

The restoration of the Persian Pool is ongoing, but the construction process revealed some structural issues that need immediate attention. The limestone slabs of the pool’s east wall, which forms the podium for the Temple of the Sky, show significant displacement; it turns out that they have been replaced several times since 1917. By properly repointing and anchoring the large stones now, we will stabilize the whole structure for a long, long time.
The Minnie Untermyer concert series proceeds with two performances on the horizon. Next Sunday, July 23, the guitar-based Trio Concertante will perform classical and popular fare, with an emphasis on the music of Argentina. On Sunday, August 13, the Victor LaGamma Jazz Quartet will return to delight us. There is no better way to relax on a slow summer weekend than to enjoy beautiful, live music while overlooking the length of the Walled Garden.
Our second team of Yonkers high school interns is hard at work in the garden. They are the primary caretakers of the Ornamental Vegetable Garden, which is now on its second, midsummer planting. The first crop was a big hit, so we look forward to seeing how the second crop fares. We hope the new fence will continue to keep out the raccoons and groundhogs!
