Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
Our stalwart crew has now planted more than 2000 hakonechloas along the Vista during a recent grueling heat wave. Uncomplaining, they worked their magic, and it is a sight to behold. Also, note the turf joints between the pavers, recalling the original Vista. We are nearing the completion of this monumental feature, which is unique in America.

Our stalwart crew has now planted more than 2000 hakonechloas along the Vista during a recent grueling heat wave. Uncomplaining, they worked their magic, and it is a sight to behold. Also, note the turf joints between the pavers, recalling the original Vista. We are nearing the completion of this monumental feature, which is unique in America.
This year, the color scheme of the annuals along the canals will be RED, so be prepared as you enter the Walled Garden! If this were not enough, some orange has been mixed in as well. We will have to trust Timothy Tilghman and Marco Polo Stufano on this one, just as we did when they wowed us with their marigold scheme a few years ago. We are not shrinking violets in Yonkers, to be sure.
The annuals flanking the east and west Rivers of Paradise were planted by the high school students who nourished them as seedlings through the winter in the municipal greenhouse. It was their chance to say good-bye to their babies and see how they grew into beautiful plants. We hope to develop more opportunities in the future for the youth of Yonkers to learn about plants and gardening.
The number of our visitors shows every indication of another quantum leap from the estimated 60,000 guests last year. In order to welcome them as well as to keep a watchful eye on the garden, we need the help of a large cadre of volunteer Greeters to join us. This is a large and important effort, but we know that many hands make light work. Won't you join us? Here is the information you'll want.
Finally, our annual Summer Solstice Sunset Soirée -- our most important annual fund-raising effort -- takes place on June 21, the actual solstice. The event celebrates the centennial of the garden and honors Michael Bakwin, a true friend of the Conservancy. We hope you'll attend to support our work and enjoy the results.
