Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
At long last, the Temple of the Sky has been restored and is open again, thanks to funding by the City of Yonkers! The site had been closed for 18 months, delayed of course by Covid, but the work has been skillfully done by Milcon Construction under the watchful eye of Integrated Conservation Resources. Once again, the magnificence of the architecture and the view to the Hudson River can be fully experienced. The mosaic floor remains as it was, but it will be restored later.

Trish Lindemann joined our staff in April as our new Education and Outreach Officer, and she hit the ground running. After receiving a degree in Plant Science at Cornell, Trish received a master’s degree from the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture Administration. Her relevant work experience includes positions at the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. We are very lucky to have Trish join us!
A small but significant improvement has just been completed. The concrete ramp to the outdoor restrooms has been rebuilt, which now makes them handicapped accessible. This is the first of a number of accessible improvements that we are planning.
We enjoy experimenting with new things at Untermyer Gardens. On Sunday, October 17, we will hold our first ever Family Fun Day, oriented especially to parents and children. A magician will perform in the amphitheater, followed by a once-a-year opportunity: kite-flying on the lawn outside the Walled Garden. To cap it off, we will also offer all three Family Adventure Tours, which have delighted many children throughout the summer.
Please take a hike down to the Ruin Garden, which is looking quite lush these days. Ferns, begonia grandis, and other plants make a very pretty picture.

Finally, our Sunset Soirée on September 14 was our best ever. Picture-perfect weather and the glorious garden setting made for a festive evening with delicious food and drink from X2O. I was a grateful honoree and lucky to share the stage with Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Samuel Untermyer Award winner. There was even a full page of coverage in the New York Times. Although I am very hands-on when it comes to the Soirée, Timothy Tilghman succeeded in surprising me. He repurposed a slice of a mighty oak that was felled by a storm last year for my presentation. He counted the tree rings—all 180—and embedded an accurate mini-timeline.
