Lecture: Untermyer Gardens: Its Periods of Glory and Its Sack
Stephen F. Byrns, Founder and President of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, delivered an illustrated lecture on March 30 at the New York School of Interior Design at 170 East 70 Street, New York, NY 10021 at 6:00 PM.
This is the centennial year of the creation of the gardens. The lecture will cover the glory days of Samuel Untermyer’s estate, Greystone, when it was internationally recognized as one of the greatest gardens in America, and the location of many spectacular social, horticultural and cultural events.
After Untermyer’s death in 1940 and the acquisition of the garden by the City of Yonkers in 1946, the property underwent a long and severe decline, eventually nearly disappearing from public consciousness. Sculptures and ornaments were sacked, and miraculous mosaics left to ruin. A satanic cult was established there, along with the presence of a mass murderer.
Archival photographs, videos, documents and eyewitness accounts from these periods were shown.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 6:00pm, Timothy Tilghman, head gardener at the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, delivered a lecture, "Untermyer Gardens: From Pompeii to Paradise--Uncovering a Great American Garden."
Join us as we chart the creation, crescendo, collapse, and recovery of one of America's exceptional landscapes. Discover fantastic gardens that were nearly lost to memory and nature's rapid progression. We will examine Samuel Untermyer's vision, as executed by the Beaux-Arts designer William Welles Bosworth, and the subsequent renown the gardens enjoyed through the mid-1900s. Followed by decades of uncertainty, the grand gardens fell into disrepair or total ruin. Very recently, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, in partnership with the City of Yonkers, has initiated efforts to reclaim this unique garden paradise.
The lecture took place at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, located at 225 West 99th Street. The price per ticket was $15.
