SPRING FUNGI WALK - MAY 5
Discover the many fungi that emerge in the springtime in the northeast on this walk through the wilder areas of Untermyer Gardens.
On Sunday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m., walk through the wilder areas of Untermyer Gardens searching for spring fungi.
Our world would not be the same without fungi! There are a vast variety that inhabit our ecosystem and provide us with many things including food, decomposers, and even bioluminescence. They have a profound effect on our landscape. During this fungi walk we will discuss major specimens that can be found in the springtime northeastern landscape. The spring is one of the most bountiful seasons for foraging and has many types that arise with the warming temperatures. Furthermore, we will discuss major tree specimens where foraged fungi can be easily found and harvested, because if you know your trees, you'll know your fungi!
Instructor Vincent Galatolo is the Director of Plant Health of the Horticulture Division at New York Botanical Garden. He started his journey in horticulture at Clemson University and completed a fellowship at Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny, France and Morris Arboretum in PA. Prior to arriving at NYBG, Vincent worked at Rock Cobble Farm in CT. One of Vincent’s biggest passions aside from plant health is fungi production and foraging. He has spent over a decade cultivating a wide variety of fungi and foraging in the northeast.

SMALL TREES FOR YOUR YARD - MAY 11
Discover some beautiful small trees at Untermyer Gardens and discuss how they work in the landscape while walking through the gardens.
When you think of trees, think beyond the towering oaks and maples… there are many beautiful small trees that are perfect for urban and suburban yards, even in containers! On Saturday, May 11, from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, join Untermyer’s Education Officer, Trish Lindemann, on walk through the gardens to look at small trees. Trish will discuss at least 20 trees growing at Untermyer Gardens with a mature height of less than 40 feet.
On this tour, you’ll see small trees used as focal points, within planting beds, and in groups. You’ll learn about the form and habit of each, its ornamental characteristics, and landscape uses. We'll look at dogwoods, cherries, redbuds, and some more unusual trees, too, like the Seven-sons flower and Ashe's magnolia.
By the end of the tour, you'll have seen and discussed and array of gorgeous small trees. You'll receive a handout of all the trees we look at including some sources for where to obtain them. Plus, you'll get to enjoy the beauty of Untermyer Gardens in the spring!
This tour will be outdoors, so dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a hat, and bring water.
