The Sundial Garden
With an evergreen gnomon, Untermyer's floral sundial was reputed to tell time to the minute. Seasonal annuals were planted to keep the clock fresh. It was not part of Bosworth's original design but was added later. Apparently, Samuel Untermyer was fond of showing off this garden feature by setting his watch to the sundial.
Today all that remains if the original sundial are the metal frameworks for the trellised roses that gate the entryways to the garden. A new sundial is in the planning stages, and will feature architectural objects found throughout the grounds. |
