Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
The year 2017 marks the centennial of Untermyer Gardens. A 1956 letter from Welles Bosworth to John D. Rockefeller, Jr., explains that in 1916, Samuel Untermyer asked him to design "the finest garden in the world." By 1917, the garden was nearly complete, and news of it was beginning to appear in the press: a reception for Jewish war relief was being held to honor Stephen Wise and Louis Marshall.
The centennial (see logo above) will be celebrated throughout the year in our increasing number of public events. It is a heady time, and we have much to be thankful for!
Things have not slowed down during the winter "hiatus."
Some time ago, it seemed convenient to create a large pile of debris and compost right along the carriage trail, a little-used byway in the garden. Over the years, the dump grew along with the number of visitors, so we decided to move it to a hidden corner on the periphery of the garden. This massive job was completed in January, freeing up a new area for planting.
Kind regards,
Stephen F. Byrns
