December 12, 2017 Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens: Join us on December 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Untermyer Park and Gardens as we unveil the third annual Grand Holiday Illumination highlighting the architecture and plantings of the Walled Garden. Following a ceremonial lighting, we will adjourn to the Temple of the Sky to enjoy hot chocolate and seasonal music. After the opening ceremony, the Illumination will take place nightly from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. through January 7. On Christmas Day and New Year's Day the Walled Garden will be open only during the hours they are illuminated: 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Kind regards,
Stephen F. Byrns President, Untermyer Gardens Conservancy Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens, As I write this, the Walled Garden has been ripped up for a major capital improvement to replumb and reline the canals. This is a critical undertaking as we continue to preserve and restore the precious hardscape created a century ago by Samuel Untermyer. It will lay the groundwork for restoring the adjacent Temple of the Sky and Persian Pool in the years to come. With your support, our progress has been swift. People often tell us how they love witnessing the unfolding improvements. Just think what you have helped us do: the plantings at the Vista are now complete, with the Temple of Love not far behind. "Blown away," "miraculous rebirth," and "unforgettable surprise" are common descriptors for the garden. Thank you for being a part of it. With your continued support, next year we will rebuild the Rock Garden, an extended cascade that will flow down to the bottom of the Temple of Love garden. Imagine hearing the sound of water rushing everywhere! None of this would mean much if it weren't experienced by the public. The garden is open nearly every day of the year free of charge. This great work of beauty is attracting major crowds. We estimate that 70,000 people visited this year, with many days of more than 1,000. The diversity of visitors at this Garden for the World is truly striking. The Persian Walled Garden, with its universal embrace of the Garden of Eden's mythology, is a national treasure and a balm for us all. At this time of year, please remember that 100 percent of our funds are privately contributed. Your support, large or small, makes the restoration of this magnificent landscape possible. Thank you in advance for helping us continue our important work together. With best wishes, Stephen F. Byrns
