Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
In a 1928 article about Samuel Untermyer, Gove Hambidge wrote that “one great advantage of the creating of gardens over other kinds of creative work is that you are never finished … A garden … is a little world perennially in the process of creation … a passion which adds to, instead of helping to destroy, the world’s store of beauty.”
We find that we too are seized by this passion as we rebuild this little world. Recently, it has been a true delight to see the pergola at the future Ornamental Vegetable Garden come back to life. A truckload of heavy, clear cedar timbers was delivered to the site and, voilà, a gorgeous garden structure is being restored. It will be shaded by vines and furnished with four stone benches that will be a highlight of the garden.

We were recently the beneficiary of another outstanding Eagle Scout project. Bronxville Troop 5 and Drew Mager built a splendid new rustic bridge over our intermittent brook, replacing the nine-year-old bridge built by our gardener Drew Schuyler. So we now have the New Drew Bridge and the Old Drew Bridge! In addition, the Boy Scouts built two new rustic benches, which offer fine views of the Hudson River and our developing tulip tree grove.

The gardeners continue to remove invasive Norway maples in the forest. They will then plant a large number of native trees. Take a look at these brush piles.
In about a month, after the weather warms up and the fountains are turned on, we anticipate a sharp rise in our visitorship. Mindful of safety concerns around the coronavirus, we will restore timed entry for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. As in 2020, we are asking for volunteers to help with this important effort.
