Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
The Vista restoration is well underway. Piping has been placed along its length, which will provide water and electrical power as needed for this area, as well as serve the adjacent Color Gardens (to be restored in a few years). Simple handrails will be installed, along with more than 100 new trees, hundreds of ornamental grasses, and an enriched paving pattern.

Simple handrails will be installed, along with more than 100 new trees, hundreds of ornamental grasses, and an enriched paving pattern.
While this would warm the cockles of Samuel Untermyer's heart, what he could not have imagined is the emergence of the Vista as New York's version of Rocky's stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Every day, one can see exercisers climbing up and down its many steps, glorying in its natural and manmade splendor. Who would have guessed?
With the deer fence now virtually complete, we will soon begin the happy task of shooing the deer out of the greatly enlarged garden enclosure, allowing us to cultivate countless plants in many new areas, as well as permitting the now-denuded forest understory to be restored for the benefit of smaller animals and birds. It's a win-win situation.
I am reminded that Artemis, who guards the main entrance to the Walled Garden, is also associated with deer. How fitting that she will face the deer on the great lawn in front of the Walled Garden, an area where they will remain free to roam.

My friends know that I am not someone on the cutting edge of the space age, so it comes as no surprise that my knowledge of the various social media is rather thin. Our gardener, Jessica Norman, is a wonderful photographer, and has posted many of her photographs of the garden on our Instagram site (Insta-what?). Well, it has taken me many months to subscribe, but now I know what all the fuss is about.
