Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens, We are now deep into a drought, having had scant rain over the past three weeks, so the gardeners are scrambling to mobilize sprinklers everywhere all day long. A nearby wooded area farther up North Broadway was recently cleared for the construction of a film studio. We quickly approached the developer about procuring the stumps from the trees that were cut down for our future Stumpery. I am happy to report that a few dozen massive stumps have now been added to our existing collection, which is scattered here and there. A wholly new, fantasy-filled garden of fanciful tree stumps will gradually take shape over the next couple of years near the new lower switchback fountain. John Rubbo, a City Councilman from East Yonkers, is the owner of the Yonkers Brewing Company, which is located downtown in the historic trolley barn building. Some time ago, he offered to donate a pile of spent grains, which has greatly enriched our organic compost pile in the service area. Perhaps the plants will get a bit of a buzz too! For me, Untermyer Gardens is an ideal triumvirate with its formal, architecturally defined gardens, informal manmade gardens, and wild, naturally created woods. I read a novel about Napoleon recently and was struck by his love of nature. Calling it the “joys of verdure,” he was never happier than walking through the changing kaleidoscope of a wonder-filled landscape. I hope you enjoy these recent close-ups from our shutterbug John Jacono. Kind regards,
