This is the time of year when the Walled Garden truly takes your breath away. In particular, at the north pool you can take in the sweeping wave of aquatic plants with a foreground riot of red and orange flowers, backed up by a waterfall of orange flowers, sometimes delicately nipped by orange goldfish.

My instinct often is to make things pretty darned good but not over the top. I tend toward shabby chic. Head Gardener Timothy Tilghman, however, is one persnickety guy. His attention to detail, from the perfectly mown grass in the Walled Garden to its groomed beds, rises to another level and makes me grateful to witness such excellence.
As a result, the crowds are growing as never before. We believe that we hit our first 1,000-person day on August 13. (We are still far from Samuel Untermyer's achievement of 30,000 visitors on October 29, 1939.)
The time is swiftly approaching when we will be renovating the canals -- the Four Rivers of Paradise -- in the Walled Garden. This capital project will require draining the water, removing the goldfish, and ripping out all the beautiful, red-flowering annuals. The work will start on Wednesday, September 20, and last until the middle of December. The perimeter beds will not be affected, but the center will be a construction site. Come see the Walled Garden before then!
Finally, to celebrate the end of summer, we have instituted a new, moderately priced fund-raiser, the End of Summer Garden Party, to be held on Saturday, September 9. The next day, September 10, will be our second spectacular observance of Mehregan, the ancient Persian festival of thanksgiving for the harvest. These back-to-back events are not to be missed. Do consider joining us!
