With the persistent cool weather we have had, the tulips have lasted longer than normal. The Walled Garden is looking splendid, and we got an endorsement from the primary Westchester newspaper as the #1 alternative to a Mother's Day brunch. So hie thee to Yonkers for a natural bonbon this Sunday.

Walking on the paths with Timothy, our Head Gardener, I came upon a big blotch of blue-flowering weeds in the grass. Timothy is so particular about how the grass is mowed and edged that the presence of such vibrant weeds seemed incongruous to me. When questioned, he replied that the weeds ("plants") have a fine texture, color and density. "America is too obsessed with the perfect, mono-cultural grass lawn," he said. He sees our lawn as a "teaching moment," adding color to the lawn. I'm not sure; what do you think?
I seem to be taken with the Persian quality of our Walled Garden. The landscape outside the garden has been planted with Cedars of Lebanon and Atlas Cedar, which I hope one day will look like Downton Abbey.
Inside the Walled Garden, the gardeners have planted Parrotia persica, a fine small tree with lustrous leaves and elegant form. Liberally dispersed are beautiful Frittilaria persica. With their silver-green foliage and dusky ruby coloring, don't they look Persian?
