Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
As the world begins to open again and people eagerly seek outdoor entertainment, our treasured amphitheater will be in the spotlight as we unveil the Minnie Untermyer Concert Series. Samuel Untermyer built the amphitheater for his wife, Minnie, a great music lover who brought musicians, singers, and dancers from around the world to its stage.
Inspired by Minnie, we will present nine performances of wide-ranging music and dance over the next four months—from choral to jazz to Persian and Indian! For many of the artists, it will be their first time on stage in at least fifteen months, so they are as excited as we are. What better place to enjoy live culture than in the midst of great horticulture, with birds and butterflies flitting overhead? Tickets are now available for all of these events.

We are most excited to kick off our Family Adventure Tours, a new addition to our collection of tours, on Sundays at 10:00 am. Three different tours have been created to mesmerize the minds of children aged 7–12, who will learn about ruins, mythology, architecture, sculpture, and plants. A parent or another adult must accompany the children, who will climb up and down our hills, experiencing worlds they never knew existed.
The governor has announced that New York State will open up to a wide extent beginning Wednesday, May 19. Therefore, as of that date, our hours will be 9:00 am to an hour before sunset, with no timed entry required. All of our gates will be accessible to welcome you back! In accordance with state guidelines, those who are fully vaccinated do not need to use a mask outdoors. However, unvaccinated visitors are asked to wear a mask out of consideration for others.
Our spring appeal highlighted our community outreach efforts, in particular our Youth Horticultural Initiative, which will expand to serve ten Yonkers public high school students this year, and our neighborhood tree-planting effort, Warblers on Warburton. Many thanks to everyone who has responded generously. It is not too late to join the community of friends whose support enables us to care for the garden faithfully and bring joy to the lives of so many. Last year’s intern team, alongside Timothy Tilghman and our gardeners, made great progress in developing the site of the ornamental vegetable garden and orchard. The latest improvement is a flight of circular stairs, based on a design by the great Renaissance architect Bramante, that links the garden with the terrace below. Mirroring the roundness of the geometric beds above and the nearby Vista Overlook, the sophisticated new stairs are a delightful way to go up and down.
