Untermyer Park and Gardens has recently experienced a media bonanza. Following the coverage by Martha Stewart on her blog and video tour last year, her Martha Stewart Livingmagazine has featured us in the October issue. Entitled "Return to Splendor," the article calls Untermyer "one of the great American horticultural treasures."

Untermyer Park and Gardens has recently experienced a media bonanza. Following the coverage by Martha Stewart on her blog and video tour last year, her Martha Stewart Livingmagazine has featured us in the October issue. Entitled "Return to Splendor," the article calls Untermyer "one of the great American horticultural treasures."
In addition, a fine book, Rescuing Eden, is coming out in two weeks, published by Monacelli Press. The chapter on Untermyer: "In the pantheon of great Gilded Age estates in the United States, the Untermyer Gardens take pride of place." That's appreciation!
Because entry to the garden is free, we have no real statistics on our visitors. However, we do look at the consumption of brochures. Jessica Norman, one of our horticulturists, pointed out that half of the 10,000 brochures that we received eight weeks ago have been taken. Assuming that there are probably four people touring for each brochure, that means we've had about 20,000 visitors since then and at least another 20,000 before that. With another six weeks of good weather left, that makes about 50,000 visitors this year.
Now we know that 30,000 visitors came to the gardens in one day, October 29, 1939 (see the New York Times article below), so we shouldn't brag, but I think Samuel Untermyer would say that we are on the right course.
