Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
For three weeks over the holidays, the Walled Garden was ablaze in color, light, and music. About 1,000 people attended the opening ceremony, when the garden emerged from darkness to light in a ten-step illumination, culminating in a brilliantly lit central tree. The countdown was called out by Mayors Angelo Martinelli and Michael Spano and we listened to Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Persian music. Thanks to the mild weather, there was a consistent flow of people every night, with the largest crowds on the weekends, when hot chocolate was served by several community groups.

Work is going gangbusters at the Temple of Love. The lower falls are under construction at this time, with large boulders and infill stones being placed at the various pools. It is amazing to think that this important area will be restored to working order this spring, the first time in 75 years.
Given all of the restoration work in progress, we thought it would be appropriate to make it the subject of our winter lecture on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:00 pm. Our head gardener, Timothy Tilghman, will discuss "Untermyer Gardens: From Pompeii to Paradise-Uncovering a Great American Garden," pointing out the many changes from ruin to splendor that have occurred over recent years. As before, it will be held at St. Michael's Church at 225 West 99th Street in Manhattan. Tickets should be reserved in advance at $15 per person online or by mail. Please note that the lecture hall is on the second floor and there is no elevator.
