Although the temperature is dipping, the garden still looks quite handsome. While the tropical plants have been transferred back to the greenhouses for the winter, the annuals along the canals in the Walled Garden are largely in bloom—perhaps the result of expert primping by our horticultural beauticians. Although the temperature is dipping, the garden still looks quite handsome. While the tropical plants have been transferred back to the greenhouses for the winter, the annuals along the canals in the Walled Garden are largely in bloom—perhaps the result of expert primping by our horticultural beauticians. Only your gardener knows for sure!
With the mosaics at the Persian Pool now completed, only a bit more electrical work remains to be done before we can fill it with water. I have been waiting for many years to observe how the rippling water on the surface interacts with the mosaic ripples of the pool lining—we shall soon see. Water will flow from the lion-head spouts on the curved podium walls of the Temple of the Sky, making for another architectural surprise, as it has been nearly half a century since they were last working.
One thing that cannot be fixed by horticultural cosmetics is vegetables, which are unquestionably finished for the season. As a result, the Ornamental Vegetable Garden has just been stripped, revealing once again its handsome architectural bones in a pleasing way. In fact, the whole of Untermyer Gardens is blessed with a strong underlying architecture, which, together with our many fine trees, guarantees great winter interest.
The gardeners are now getting the Walled Garden ready for our Grand Holiday Illumination, a mammoth project. It is a labor of love which seems to get a bit more ambitious every year. The star of the show will be the Illuminated Persian Pool. It will also feature a special light display created by the students at Saunders High School in collaboration with our gardeners. As always, this unique presentation is our gift to the public and will be free of charge. We are grateful to the Yonkers Economic Development Corporation for their leadership support and to all our sponsors: ArtsWestchester, Domino Sugar, AVR Realty Company, Schildwachter Oil, and St. John’s Riverside Hospital.
