This year, we have two cohorts of students for our Youth Horticultural Initiative, which is sponsored by the Carvel Foundation, St. Faith’s House Foundation, a Yonkers Community Development Block Grant, and ConEdison. The first team has just completed its term, which was most productive. The students ended their final weeks with a horticultural bang: planting the steep hillside above the new Vegetable Garden and the fruit trees to the north, which define our fledgling orchard. As a garden that is open free of charge seven days a week, our most important source of funding is our annual Sunset Soirée. It celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy and will be held outdoors, so is very safe. Please show your appreciation of the heroic work that is being done by our dedicated gardeners and consider attending this festive party.
As Muslims worldwide recently celebrated Eid al-Adha, our Walled Garden has become an increasingly popular destination for families to gather in their exuberant finery. There is a festive, even operatic, quality to such days, which adds a vivid layer to our already colorful gardens.
Construction at the Temple of the Sky is crawling to completion, and two gigantic blocks of Alabama marble were hoisted to the top. The final application of lead waterproofing strips will protect the upper ring from water infiltration and enable the complete removal of the scaffolding. Large chunks of marble are being installed in the perimeter pavement to replace marble that was badly deteriorated. This work should be completed before Labor Day and will be worth the wait.
The second cluster of summer concerts is soon to conclude. Do consider attending a performance by the tenor Marc Molomot of Schubert’s seminal lieder series, Die Schöne Müllerin. It’s an entertaining and elegant way to spend a late summer afternoon.
