Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
Despite the inclement weather, we have continued to make progress at Untermyer Gardens. Late last year, the fine folks at Nationwide Maintenance gave their all to remove the many layers of graffiti that despoiled the Gate House. The clean facade is surprisingly subtle and elegant, sporting three tones of stucco, one of which is embedded with tiny aggregate flakes. This area will be converted into a Ruin Garden in 2018.

Once again, we have been gratified by the strong response of our donors in 2017 -- some 829 of them, up from 694 in 2016, a 20% increase. As you know, there is no charge to enter the garden, so these donations enable us to continue our work at an impressive speed.
It's hard to believe, but views of the garden from only four years ago now seem like ancient history. Take a look at this picture of the Temple of Love area in 2014 (including Mayor Spano and a volunteer Boy Scout troop) and compare it to today's view.

It was in Iran, the cradle of civilization, that some of the world's most beautiful gardens were created, based on the Garden of Eden. They inspired William Welles Bosworth and Samuel Untermyer to create a paradise garden (pairidaeza) here in Yonkers. I invite you to come to my lecture about Persian gardens in Iran on Monday, February 26, at 921 Madison Avenue in New York City. Ticket sales have been robust, and seating is limited. (Last year the lecture was sold out.) I hope you are able to come.
