A friend of mine recently told me that this is the time of year when things change from black-and-white to color for her. The extravagant parade of color is in full swing here, with our lavish display of tulips in the Walled Garden now at peak bloom. Run, don’t walk, to savor this ephemeral treat.

A much subtler flower can be enjoyed at the Lower Terrace of the Walled Garden amid the hydrangeas. Honoring our Persian heritage are hooded, smoky-colored Fritillaria persica.
With the return of mild weather, I am thrilled to be able to bike the six miles from my home to the office. The vertical climb is daunting, but arriving at the garden is always a thrill. Here is the “rack” near the main entrance. We also have a proper bike rack just inside the Aqueduct gate.
The tiny glimpse we had earlier this year of the new Rock and Stream Garden hardscape is now fully functioning. What a thrill it is to see the 425-foot-long watercourse flowing down the hillside into the Temple of Love lower basin. The sight and sound of water is everywhere in this part of the garden. Some woody plants will soon be placed, with an enormous herbaceous planting to take place over the next few years. In time, the Temple of Love in combination with the Rock and Stream Garden will be come a strong informal balance to the formal grandeur of the Walled Garden and Vista to the north.
As a garden that is open free of charge seven days a week, our most important source of funding is our annual Summer Solstice Sunset Soirée. This year it takes place on Wednesday, June 19, and honors Martin Ginsburg. Please show your appreciation of the heroic work that is being done by our dedicated gardeners and consider attending this festive party.
Finally, most of the tickets have already been sold to our first ever Persian concert on Saturday, June 8. It will be a peaceful, spiritual, and unusual way to experience our Persian Walled Garden from a prime seat in the amphitheater. Do pick up a ticket soon while there’s time.
