Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
Now that the Ruin Garden is in good shape, the next link in the chain connecting the Old Croton Aqueduct entrance to the historic garden above is the Rhododendron Walk. Formerly a wild area filled with invasive plants growing under some lovely old trees, our crew of seven Yonkers public high school students has worked under grueling conditions to clear this large area, removing many truckloads of brush. The soil is being rototilled and enriched, with cutting and filling taking place. A mulched path will be built, as well as various new stairs to help with the climb. Once this hard work is done, the fun part begins, which is the planting of countless rhododendrons and woodland plants. This is our first high school intern project, and so far it is a total success!
Another way to enjoy the gardens this summer is to join Julia Eisen-Lester for an art class in the gardens. Create your own drawings with artist’s crayons and see the gardens from a different perspective.
Kind regards,
