Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
With the canals now bubbling away and the fish at last making a home therein, we have inaugurated a modest program of recorded classical music in the Walled Garden. Everyday at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm, there will be about 20 minutes of beautiful music, softly played. Many people have commented about the spiritual sensibility of a Persian garden, and this will enhance that feeling, giving it a magical quality.
I was inspired by a wonderful garden in Barbados that is enlivened by music, as well as the Frick Collection, which plays organ music at certain times in its galleries. Our sound system was the generous gift of Richard and Beth Fitzgerald, to whom we owe warm thanks.
Finally, you will want to know about three outstanding events in the garden in September. The first is Mehregan, on Sunday, September 16, our spectacular celebration of the Persian thanksgiving for the harvest, with outstanding Persian food, music, dance, and esphand. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the inaugural Samuel Untermyer Award to Christiane Amanpour.
Kind regards,
Stephen F. Byrns
President, Untermyer Gardens Conservancy
