Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
Our big news is that we now have our third full-time gardener, Andrew Schuyler. Drew, a native of North Yonkers, served as our first seasonal worker in 2012. He graduated with honors from Longwood Gardens' Professional Gardener Program (one of the finest in the country), followed by an internship at Great Dixter in England. We are thrilled to have him on board and look forward to continued improvements from our burgeoning horticultural machine! (And yes, he is related to Alexander Hamilton's wife, Elizabeth Schuyler.) With our three seasonal workers, six gardeners are now working their magic.

Our Head Gardener Timothy Tilghman is just starting to scratch the surface horticulturally at the Temple of Love. Last week a load of bog plants was installed in the three bog areas, and he is hatching a scheme with Marco Polo Stufano for woody plants to be added this fall. This area will see extensive planting in the next year. We will create our own Daffodil Hill, just like Samuel Untermyer's in the 1920s; in fact, some of his bulbs are still viable.
One of the surprises for me this year is the outstanding beauty of our aquatics. There are various arrangements of diverse plants, and each is a work of art. I invite you to come see them in the Walled Garden -- they are really quite stunning.
In fact, I think the magnificence of the aquatics deserves more attention, so the Conservancy has decided to sponsor a special class so we can learn more about them and how to arrange and care for them. Jessica Norman will lead this class at 10:00 am on Sunday, September 11. It will cost $20 per person. The group will meet at the large pool near the amphitheater in the Walled Garden.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to two special events at the garden in September. Our End of Summer Garden Party is sponsored by the Young Friends of Untermyer Gardens and will take place on Sunday, September 17, from 5:00-8:00 pm.
On Monday, September 26, we will celebrate the ancient Persian secular festival ofMehregan, which is based on thanksgiving for the harvest, from 5:30-9:30 pm. Sattar, the well-known Iranian singer, will perform.
