Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy was established in 2011, so this year marks our tenth anniversary. Our progress has been rapid, with seven new gardens at the Walled Garden, Lower Terrace, Vista, Rhododendron Walk, Ruin Garden, Temple of Love, and Rock and Stream Garden, not to mention numerous capital projects associated with them and found elsewhere. As the year progresses, we look forward to sharing highlights from our first decade.
What about the next ten years? The virtual Conversation scheduled on January 30 between the renowned garden historian Toby Musgrave and our head gardener Timothy Tilghman will explore just that. The second half of the Conversation will look at historic areas to be restored and other new garden features. Toby will draw on his knowledge of gardens worldwide and provide inspiration as we move forward at Untermyer.
In preparation for the Conversation on January 30, Timothy poked around the site of the original Sundial Garden, now in the woods (hardly a sunny spot!) just north of the Rock and Stream Garden. Several indicators suggest its location, primarily the old rusted tunnel-like arbors through which one entered it originally. At the center of this area, he used a metal detector to discover the metal piping that formed the curve of the dial. Eureka!
