Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens,
The winter allows us to work on projects behind the scenes. Such a case was a re-routed path in the woods that replaced another path that was a bit too steep. Soil was delivered for the new ramp, and invasive shrubs were removed to expose a nice thicket of bottlebrush buckeyes. This led us to discover that we were in a grove of tulip trees, concealed by a mass of invasive Norway maples. Once they were removed, the grove could shine in glory!

While toiling away on the new Tulip Grove, the gardeners had some moments of levity. Here is a picture of Liz Dreeben with new stubby legs and Drew Schuyler on a rustic fainting couch.

Another worthy project has been undertaken by Jessica Norman, our Education/Outreach officer and a volunteer, Trish Lindemann. Through their hard work our plant records are now accessible on our website. In addition to continuing to edit and improve this database, Jessica and Trish are creating maps of garden areas. While it is still a work in progress, you can find the names, locations and information about an astonishing number of our plants.

Last fall, a clever visitor saw something that bears mention. One of the magnificent weeping beeches flanking the entrance to the Walled Garden has massive branches that have grown into each other in a most unusual intertwining way. She called it our DNA tree. This observation will always be with me whenever I see it!
Tickets are selling quickly for our Winter Lecture on Monday, March 9, to be delivered by Caroline Seebohm about her new book, Paradise on the Hudson, about Samuel Untermyer and his garden on March 9. Books can be purchased along with your tickets, and Caroline will be happy to sign one for you!
A fun opportunity for adults and children is our first birdhouse-making class which will take place at 10:30AM on Saturday, March 14. Come have a nice experience with a little one!
