A lot going on!

Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:

The month of September has seen a flurry of special events at the garden. On September 11, we hosted our second Yonkers Day, a lovely afternoon of treats and music for the people of Yonkers, who collectively own Untermyer Park and Gardens as part of our public-private partnership. Here are some shots.

This was followed on September 17 by our first End of the Summer Garden Party, sponsored by the nascent Young Friends of Untermyer Gardens. Here are some pictures of this event.

September 26 saw our first celebration of Mehregan, a major fund-raiser to commemorate the ancient Persian secular festival of thanksgiving for the harvest. People came from all over the region to see this great Persian garden and to celebrate in style. Here is the gallery for Mehregan. Our restoration work at the Vista continues, with masonry repairs and a new drainage system now in place, soon to be followed by the addition of safety railings to guide visitors down the 135 or so steps to the ancient Roman columns. Look for a dedication of the restored Vista next spring.

The planting of the Temple of Love has begun in earnest, with a grove of Japanese maples and weeping hemlocks now in place. This is just the beginning, with 5,000 daffodils to come this fall and hundreds more plants to go into the ground over the next year.

October is the last month to see Untermyer in all its glory, before the cold weather takes its inevitable toll. Please come see our progress!
