In Bloom in the Gardens
Each week What's in Bloom features favorite plants that are in bloom or are of interest in the gardens.
In the week beginning October 21, Silene dioica or Red Campion is blooming in the lower terrace and east border of the Walled Garden. We like this dainty yet hot pink flower quite a bit.

Impatiens omeiana, generally planted more for its foliage than its flowers, is blooming in the shade area of the Temple of Love.

Allium thunbergii 'Ozawa' is blooming in the southern end of the west border in the Walled Garden. A late blooming and brightly colored ornamental onion, it brings a shot of bright purple to wherever it is planted.

In the week beginning October 14, Leucosceptrum stellipilum or Japanese shrub mint is blooming in the shade area near the Temple of Love.
|
Eurybia divaricata or wood aster is covered in little white flowers. This aster is blooming near the Temple of Love as well.
|
Salvia leucantha or Mexican bush sage has fuzzy purple flowers. It is blooming in the cascade beds below the Temple of Love.
|
In the week beginning October 7, the bright red berries of Viburnum 'Cardinal Candy' are definitely living up to their name. This Viburnum is in the east border of the Walled Garden.

Another bright berry in the gardens is Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst'. This shrub is in the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

This photo doesn't adequately show the height of Aster tartaricus 'Jindai' nor how popular it is with the monarchs currently migrating through the area.

In the week beginning September 30, Symphiotrichum oblongifolium 'October Skies', the aromatic aster, is blooming prolifically in the cascade beds below the Temple of Love.

Abelia 'Rose Creek' is absolutely covered with blooms in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Leonotis leonurus towers above the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
The hardy Begonia grandis is blooming in the shady area by the Temple of Love in the week beginning September 23.
|
Ageratina altissima or white snakeroot is blooming like mad in the woods near the Temple of Love.
|
Sometimes you plant things not for what they look like but for what they can do: Gymnocoronis spilanthoides isn't the best looking plant and doesn't have the most beautiful flowers but monarch butterflies love them so we plant them so we can enjoy them fluttering around.

Colchicum cilicium is blooming in the outer canal borders in the week beginning September 16. Colchicums are also known as autumn crocus despite not being in the crocus genus. These fall-blooming bulbs are a welcome flashback (or forward?) to spring and look-alike crocuses.

These Thunbergia alata cultivars are trailing down into the amphitheater reflecting pool. These annuals are also known as black-eyed Susan vine.
|
Lespedeza thunbergii 'Gibraltar' are just coming into prolific bloom in two places in the west border of the Walled Garden. This Japanese bush clover cultivar is a rockstar in the late summer garden.

In bloom in the week beginning September 9, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides has a very long latin name to describe this lovely blue-flowered plant also known as leadwort or plumbago. You can find it blooming in two places near the Temple of Love. After it is done blooming, its reddish bracts are still colorful into the fall.

A showstopper in the west border of the Walled Garden, this Vernonia lettermanii 'Iron Butterfly' will be absolutely covered with violet flowers and more than a few butterflies.

Heptacodium myconiodes or the seven son tree is blooming in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden. It too boasts brightly colored pink bracts which extend its "bloom" season into the fall.

Blooming in the week beginning September 2nd, Begonia grandis is hardy here in the New York City area. In addition to its pink flowers, it boasts red-veined undersides to its leaves and is planted in the shady south side of the Temple of Love.

Tithonia rotundifolia 'Torch' is also known as Mexican Sunflower. It is in bloom in pots near the center reflecting pool in the Walled Garden.

Yes, this is a weed, but you can't help notice its enthusiastic pink blooms at this time of year. Pennsylvania smartweed or Polygonatum pennsylvanicum is blooming in the switchback meadow below the Walled Garden.

Blooming in the week beginning August 26, Caryopteris x cladonensis 'Worcester Gold' has the enthusiastic late purple blooms of other cultivars but adds in interesting gold foliage in the early part of the season.

Another lower terrace plant in bloom is this Hydrangea involucrata 'Blue Bunny'. It is remarkable for its wonderful purple and white blooms as well as its large peony-like buds.

Melinis nerviglumis 'Savannah' has delightfully pink panicles that move around in the breeze. It is blooming in the Temple of Love cascade beds.
|
Aralia spinosa boasts an evocative common name: devil's walking stick. It gets this name from its prolific spines on its trunk. It is blooming in the week beginning on August 19 along the woodland path between the Vista and the Temple of Love.

Hosta plantaginea has large beautiful and marvelously scented flowers. It is blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden as well as by the south gate of the Walled Garden's lower terrace.

Tricyrtis 'Gilt Edge' is blooming against the wall of the Ruin Garden's gatehouse. Its common name, toad lily, belies the beauty of its small orchid-like blooms.
|
Kiringeshoma palmata or Japanese waxbell has soft yellow blooms and large leaves. It is blooming in the shade near the Temple of Love in the week beginning August 12.

Vernonia noveborecensis, also known as New York Ironweed, is blooming in several places in the west border of the Walled Garden. This very tall native plant is a favorite of butterflies and other pollinators.

Ligularia dentata 'Dark Beauty's yellow blooms contrast with its large dark foliage. This ligularia is blooming in the lower terrace's hydrangea border.

Allium 'Millennium' is blooming in the week beginning August 5. This allium is a great late summer bloomer and is deer and rodent resistant. We have some of this allium in the Walled Garden west border as well as in the Temple of Love cascade beds.

Leptodermis oblonga looks like a tiny lilac bush and is blooming again in the west border of the Walled Garden. It blooms twice a year, once in early summer and once in late summer.

Anemone x hybrida 'September Charm' is again getting ahead of itself by blooming in the beginning of August. We don't mind as it is a lovely addition to the north end of the Walled Garden west border.

In the week beginning July 29, Campsis grandiflora 'Morning Calm' is blooming on a loggia by the Walled Garden amphitheater. Its huge flowers are a contrast with the smaller flowers of Campsis radicans cultivars growing nearby. It is like a trumpet vine on steroids.

Hydrangea 'Pinky Winky' has delicious looking panicles in a gradient of pink to white. It grows in a couple places in the west border of the Walled Garden.

Vitex agnus-castus 'Abbeville Blue' is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
Ratibida columnifera 'Red Midget' is growing in the cascade beds below the Temple of Love in the week beginning July 22.
|
Eryngium yuccifoilum is commonly known as rattlesnake master. Fortunately we don't have any rattlesnakes to test it on.
|
Iris domestica was once known as Belamcanda chinensis. Its flowers are beautiful but its common name, blackberry lily, refers to its shiny black seeds.

In the week beginning July 15, Dichomena colorata or star grass continues to bloom in the lowest pool of the Temple of Love Cascades. It enjoys boggy conditions.

Eutrochium dubium recently changed its name from Eupatorium. This Joe Pye weed cultivar, 'Baby Joe' is definitely shorter than its forebears.
|
Queen Anne's Lace or Daucus carota grows near the Temple of Love and in the meadow. A cultivar of a subspecies of this plant, Daucus carota ssp. sativa gives us carrots!

In the week beginning July 8, this milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa 'Hello Yellow' is blooming brightly in the cascade beds below the Temple of Love

Ammi 'Dara' is reminiscent of a burgundy Queen Anne's Lace flower. It is also blooming in the cascade beds below the Temple of Love.

Rhododendon 'Weston's Lemon Drop' is blooming in the north end of the east border.
|
Aesculus parviflora or Bottlebrush Buckeye is blooming where the woodland trail meets the carriage trail in the week beginning with July 1.
|
Hydrangea arborescens 'Invincibelle Spirit' is blooming in the north end of the Walled Garden's lower terrace.
|
Allium sphaerocephalon is blooming near the picnic area at the entrance to the gardens.
|
In the week of June 24, the very cheery 'Chrome Queen' Califonia Poppy cultivar is blooming on the Temple of Love.
|
Common milkweed or Asclepias syriaca is blooming around the Aqueduct gate at the far west side of the property. We try to avoid cutting it when cutting the grass.

Hydrangea 'Endless Summer' has begun to bloom in the west border of the Walled Garden's lower terrace.
|
Touch-me-not or Jewel Weed (Impatiens capensis) is beginning to bloom in wet spots along the carriage trail in the week of June 16.

Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' a Virginia sweetspire, is blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snowflake', an oakleaf hydrangea cultivar with doubled blooms is flowering in the east border of the Walled Garden.

In the week of June 10, Oenothera berlanderi 'Siskiyou' is blooming in the Walled Garden west border as well as below the Temple of Love.
|
Gypsophila 'Kermesina', an annual, is growing in the canal borders in the Walled Garden.
|
Liriodendron tulipifera or the tulip tree is living up to its name with these brightly colored flowers.
|
The week of June 3, Magnolia ashei is blooming outside the Walled Garden as well as in a lawn panel inside the Walled Garden. Its enormous blooms are enormously scented as well.

As you look from the lower terrace of the Walled Garden you'll see an enormous Korean dogwood or Cornus kousa covered with white flowers.
|
Several roses are blooming on the cut stone fence of the lower terrace. Rosa 'Westerland' is a favorite because its scent is as lovely as its blooms.
|
In the week of May 26, Porteranthus trifoliatus or Bowman's Root is blooming in the cascade beds of the Temple of Love.
|
Eremurus Ruiter Hybrid or Foxtail lily is also blooming in the cascade beds of the Temple of Love.
|
Also known for its remarkable bronze spring foliage, Rodgersia podophylla 'Bronze Form' is blooming to the south of the Temple of Love.
|
In the week of May 19, Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko' is blooming in the west border in the Walled Garden.
|
Nearby in the west border, Baptisia australis 'Purple Smoke' is beginning to bloom.
|
Wiegela florida 'Wine and Roses' is also blooming in the west border in the Walled Garden.
|
In the week of May 12, the pink snowball-like flowers of Viburnum 'Mary Milton' are blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
The fleshy reddish-pink flowers of Calycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' have begun to bloom in the Walled Garden south border as well as in the lower terrace.
|
Long trailing blooms of Wisteria Violet Long Cluster decorate the stoa in the Walled Garden.
|
In the second week of May, these species tulips, Tulipa batalinii 'Bright Gem' are blooming under a redbud in the northern end of the west border of the Walled Garden.

Blue spikes of Camassia liechtlinii 'Caerulea' are blooming in the terraces to the south of the Temple of Love.
|
Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' is blooming near the Temple of Love.
|
Geranium 'Rozanne' is blooming in the west border in the fourth week of October.
|
Allium thunbergii 'Ozawa' is blooming in the west border.
|
Rosa 'Knockout Pink' is blooming for the last time this season in the west border.

In the third week in October, Rabdosia longituba is blooming in the northernmost end of the Walled Garden west border.

Leucosceptrum japonicum 'Golden Angel' is blooming in the south end of the lower terrace.

Vibrunum dilatatum 'Vernon Morris' is showing off its yellow berries in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Anemone x 'Whirlybird' is blooming in the northern end of the west border in the Walled Garden in the second week in October.
|
Hakonechloa macra is known more for its beautiful leaves than its flowers, but we enjoy its frothy purplish blooms as well.
|
Viburnum dilatatum 'Cardinal Candy' has stunning red berries in the east border.
|
In the first week of October, Clematis tibetana is blooming on the stone fence of the lower terrace. Its fine grey-green leaves and plentiful yellow-orange blooms are a welcome sign of fall.

Colchicum are starting to bloom in the outer canal borders.

Ageratina altissima is blooming in swaths around the Temple of Love.

In the fourth week of September, the aster Symphiotrichum ericoides 'Snow Flurry' is beginning to bloom in the east border of the Walled Garden.

Heptacodium miconiodes is blooming in the lower terrace hydrangea bed. The bees are a big fan of its blooms.
|
Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst' has finished blooming, but its ripening berries are transitioning from green to vibrant violet. It is near the Heptacodium in the lower terrace hydrangea bed.

Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert' is blooming in the north end of the west border in the Walled Garden in the third week in September.
|
Lespedeza thunbergii 'Gibraltar' is blooming in more than one place in the west border in the Walled Garden in the third week in September.
|
While not grown for its flowers, we are fond of the white panicles of Aralia cordata 'Sun King'. The chartreuse foliage is also a favorite!
|
Begonia grandis 'Alba' is blooming in the this second week in September. It is hardy here in Yonkers and seeds itself freely including into this pot on the stoa in the Walled Garden.

Sometimes we stray from our original mission of showing plants in bloom. This is Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst' and its fruit is wonderful shades from green to purple as it ripens. You can find it in the southern half of the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

In the west border of the Walled Garden, Vernonia lettermanii 'Iron Butterfly' is blooming. Its plentiful flowers attract butterflies and bees by the dozens.

Lagerstroemia 'Plum Magic' is blooming in a pot on the stoa in the Walled Garden in the first week of September. The combination of dark foliage and purple flowers is very nice in this crepe myrtle.
|
Chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' is blooming in the southern end of the Walled Garden. Its dark foliage is in contrast to the nearby variegated foliage of a Hakonechloa and a Cornus.

Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldi' is blooming in a pot on the stoa in the Walled Garden. It is sweetly scented. The Cuphea ignea below it is not scented but is beloved by hummingbirds.

Hydrangea involucrata 'Blue Bunny' is blooming in the southern end of the hydrangea border in the last week of August. The large buds of H. involucrata are quite distinctive.

Lagerstroemia 'Dynamite' or Crepe Myrtle is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
The male cones of the Blue Atlas Cedar or Cedrus atlantica glauca group are getting ready to release clouds of pollen. When they do, and on a windy day, you can see drifts of yellow coming off the tree!

Hosta 'Honeybells' is blooming in the third week of August in the east border of the Walled Garden. These hosta are sweetly scented.
|
Abelia x grandiflora are blooming near the Hosta 'Honeybells' in the east border of the Walled Garden. And, like the neighboring Hosta, are sweetly scented.

Verbena bonariensis are blooming on the Temple of Love. These freely self-seeded from a few plants from last year.

Caryopteris x cladonensis 'Blue Knight' is blooming in the amphitheater reflecting pool border in the second week of August. Bees and butterflies are big fans of the caryopteris.

Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' is blooming in the north end of the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

The unusual flowers of Hydrangea 'Ayesha' are blooming in the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden in the fourth week of July.

Ruta graveolens or rue is blooming on the Temple of Love in the third week in July.

Hydrangea 'Pinky-Winky' is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden. Later in the season its flowers will start to live up to their name and become more pink.

Hydrangea 'Tokyo Delight' is blooming in the Walled Garden west border. Its foliage and stems are tinged with dark red.

In the first week of July Albizia julibrissin 'Chocolate' has a limited number of pink pompon -like flowers. We grow it more for its chocolate-colored foliage than for the pink blooms.

Campsis grandiflora 'Morning Calm' is living up to its species name in the first week of July. The enormous orange flowers are on the west side of the amphitheater.

Hydrangea aspera is blooming in the first week of July.

Hydrangea serrata 'Miyama-yae-murasaki' in the lower terrace hydrangea border has blooms ranging from lavender to pink in the last week of June.

Aesculus parviflora or Bottlebrush Buckeye is blooming along the carriage trail.

Veronicastrum virginicum 'Lavendelturm' is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden in the last days of June.
|
Eryngium planum 'Big Blue' is blooming in the fourth week of June in the northern end of the Walled Garden's west border.

Geranium 'Brookside' is absolutely covered with blue blossoms to the south of the stoa in the Walled Garden.
|
Persicaria polymorpha or white fleece flower is waving its feathery blooms in the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

Blooming in the third week in June, Tradescantia 'Tall and Blue' is taller and more upright than other tradescantia cultivars. It's purple flowers are contrasted against a background of the bright foliage of Spiraea thunbergii 'Ogon'

Leptodermis oblonga is blooming in a few places in the west border of the Walled Garden in the third week in June.
|
Clematis recta 'Purpurea' has tiny white flowers on its purple foliage. You can find it in the northern end of the west border of the Walled Garden in the third week in June.

Geranium 'Rozanne' is blooming in a few places in the west border of the Walled Garden in the second week of June. It will continue to bloom until the first frost.
|
Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' is blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snowflake' is blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden. The striking double blooms on this oakleaf hydrangea make it a favorite.
|
In the first week of June, Indigofera amblyantha is blooming in the northern half of the west border. It will continue blooming for months to come.
|
Magnolia ashei is blooming in one of the lawn panels in the Walled Garden. It's enormous white flowers are beautifully scented. Another M. ashei was planted last year outside the Walled Garden but does not appear to be blooming yet.

This big Cornus kousa or Korean dogwood is blooming in the angle between the lower terrace of the Walled Garden and the Vista. It is one of the biggest Korean dogwoods we've ever seen.

In the last week of May, Calycanthus florida 'Hartlage Wine' is blooming in the south border of the Walled Garden. Nearby in the same border is another cultivar, 'Venus' which has similar but white blooms.

Weigela 'Wine and Roses' is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden. The combination of dark foliage and pink flowers is striking.
|
Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Dream' is one of two Bignonia cultivars blooming in the amphitheater. The other, a reddish orange flower is 'Dragon Lady'

In the fourth week of May, the Abelia monsanensis is blooming in the northern end of the Walled Garden. If you sit on the bench in front of it you will be able to enjoy its scent.

Allium karataviense is blooming in the outer canal borders.

Allium stipitatum 'White Giant' is blooming in the outer canal borders in the fourth week of May.
|
In the third week of May, Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' is blooming on the Temple of Love. This purple flowered ground cover is deer resistant.

Cymbalaria muralis blooms throughout the season but it is especially pretty this week. It can be found in many locations in the gardens including in the Walled Garden and on the Temple of Love.

Epimedium 'Lila Fee' is blooming in the Walled Garden south border.
|
Iris cristata 'Powder Blue Giant' is blooming in the second week of May in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
Tiarella cordifolia 'Running Tapestry' is in bloom in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
In the first week of May, Carolina jessamine or Gelsimium sempervirens is blooming in the north border of the Walled Garden.
|
The tulips in the canal borders are at their peak. This year's tulips are 'Purple Dream' and 'Innuendo'.
|
Viburnum 'Mary Milton' is especially pink this year in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
In the last week of April, Fothergilla 'Blue Shadow' has white blooms in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Fritillaria persica makes reference to the Persian influences on Samuel Untermyer's landscape architect Bosworth. You can find it in several places in the Walled Garden.
|
The yellow flowers behind the Persian fritillary are Disporum flavens. They are blooming in the lower terrace hydrangea border.
|
Planted just this fall, Clematis 'Stolwijk Gold' is already blooming in the lower terrace in the third week of April.
|
Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' is blooming in the north end of the east border in the Walled Garden.
|
Exocorda macrantha 'The Bride' is in bloom in the east border of the Walled Garden.
|
Carex morrowii 'Silk Tassel' is blooming in the north border of the Walled Garden in the second week in April.
|
Forsythia x intermedia 'Gold Leaf' is grown more for its chartreuse leaves than its yellow flowers.
|
Prunus 'Hally Jolivette' is blooming next to the Temple of the Sky in the Walled Garden.
|
Fritillaria meleagris or the snake's head fritillary is in bloom in the first week of April in the north border of the Walled Garden.

Muscari armeniacum is blooming in the outer canal borders of the Walled Garden.

In the third week of March, three cultivars of Iris reticulata are blooming in the outer canal borders in the Walled Garden. This one is 'Clairette'

In the Third week in March, Corylopsis spicata is blooming in the east border of the Walled Garden.

In the first week of January, due to unusually warm temperatures in December, the Prunus mume 'Peggy Clarke' is blooming in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

The winter-blooming Mahonia media 'Winter Sun' is in flower on the lower terrace of the Walled Garden. Its sweetly scented yellow blooms are a special treat in January.

Recently planted in the southern end of the lower terrace, Edgeworthia papyrifera is blooming in the first week of January.

In the last week of October, Geranium 'Rozanne' is in bloom again in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
Hydrangea 'Lady in Red' is showing off its bright fall foliage in the west border of the Walled Garden.
|
The native, and sometimes weedy, Virginia creeper or Parthenocissus quinquefolia has brilliant red fall foliage. You can find it in the woods of Untermyer as well as growing on the fountain in the lilac collection which is below the lower terrace.

In the last week of October, Amsonia hubrichtii is showing off its fall foliage. During the summer the feathery foliage is green but now parts are turning a purple brown while the majority is moving toward lemon yellow.
|
Schizachyrium scoparium or little bluestem spent the summer in shades of silvery green with hints of pink. In the fall, it has tiny fluffy flowers and seeds while the color of the grass intensifies into blues, greens and reddish pinks.
|
Abelia monsanensis is long past the time of its blooms but in the fall its leaves and bracts turn bright autumn shades making it seem as if it were in bloom again.
|
Colchicum autumnale 'Albopleno' is blooming in the outer canal borders in the Walled Garden in the third week in October.
|
The annual Euphorbia 'Hip Hop''s fine foliage and white bracts have been enlivening both container plantings and a few spots in the Walled Garden's west border since this spring.

Helianthus angustifolius 'First Light' is blooming in the back of the west border in the Walled Garden.

Dahlia 'Coppertone' is blooming in the west border of the Walled Garden in the second week of October.

The male cones of the Blue Atlas Cedar in the east border of the Walled Garden are releasing clouds of pollen that you may notice as yellow dust on the nearby plants and pathways. The amount of pollen is impressive.

While there are many flowers blooming in the gardens, we though we'd feature three brightly colored fruit that visitors will see in the gardens in the first week of October. This unknown crabapple cultivar with yellow fruit is growing in the east border of the Walled Garden.

The yellow fruited Viburnum 'Vernon Morris' is in the northern part of the east border in the Walled Garden.

The almost unreal looking bright purple fruit of the beautyberry can be found in the southern part of the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden.

Nepeta 'Joanna Reed' has been blooming continuously since June in the east border of the Walled Garden. If you rub a leaf between your fingers it releases a nice mint-cinnamon smell.

White snake root or Ageratina altissima is blooming near the Temple of Love and in other meadow areas. It is native to the eastern half of of the USA.

Impatiens capensis or Jewel Weed is a native plant that likes moist soil - at Untermyer you'll see it near the little bridge on the woodland trail and near another wet spot along the carriage trail.

Actaea simplex 'Hillside Black Beauty' is blooming in the northern half of the hydrangea border in the third week of September.

Lespedeza thunbergii 'Gibraltar' is covered in pink blooms in a couple locations in the west border.

Symphyotrichum ericoides 'Snow Flurry' is blooming in the east border just to the south of the stoa. This low to the ground plant is just covered with tiny white blooms.

Dahlia 'Mystic Spirit' is blooming in the second week of September in one of the containers in the amphitheater. Its dark foliage makes it an interesting addition.

Heptacodium miconiodes is a favorite of bumblebees. It is blooming in the southern half of the hydrangea border in the lower terrace of the Walled Garden. When the plant has matured, it will have the added attraction of beautiful peeling bark.

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' has small sprays of soft blooms in the northeast corner of the Walled Garden. Its foliage really lights up in a shady corner.

The regally named Victoria amazonica is blooming in the reflecting pool by the amphitheater in the first week in September. Each bloom lasts for a day so a visitor to the gardens may see a bloom or just buds.

Vernonia lettermanii 'Iron Butterfly' is aptly named. You'll find it covered in butterflies and bees in the west border of the Walled Garden.

Colchicum 'Violet Queen' is a fall blooming bulb often mistaken for an autumn crocus. It is one of several Colchicum varieties growing in the outer canal borders between the fastigiate beeches.

Sanguisorba canadensis or Canadian burnet is blooming in the last week of August in the southern part of the hydrangea border. If you've been discouraged by other Sanguisorba species and cultivars flopping over, you may want to try canadensis in your garden.

Tricyrtis 'Samurai' is blooming in the northern end of the east border in the Walled Garden. This cultivar is distinguished by the fine white borders on its leaves.

Gelsimium sempervirens or Carolina jessamine is an evergreen vine blooming here in the third week in May. You can find it in the Walled Garden on the stairs to the lower terrace and covering a water cage in the north west bed.

Halesia carolina or the silver bells tree is to the right about halfway down the Vista Steps. Its bell-like white flowers are graceful and beautiful in the third week of May.

Tiarella cordifolia or foam flower along the edges of the pathway leading to the south west tower in the Walled Garden. Foam flower is lovely in the third week of May but it also is a lovely ground cover once the flowers are spent.

In the first and second week of May, the tulip plantings in the canal beds are in full bloom. These tulip plantings are annual as the bulbs are not bred to come back reliably year after year. This means that the gardens will have new and different tulips every year!

Also in the first two week of May, the cherry trees on the lower terrace are blooming. Some of these trees may be as old as the gardens themselves.

This eastern redbud or Cercis canadensis 'Appalachian Red' has been putting on a show in the east border for the past two weeks although in the second week of May, it has really come into its own. Its vibrant flowers seem to cover every branch of the small tree.

In bloom in the first week of April in the Walled Garden are three Iris reticulata cultivars including 'George' (seen above), 'Clairette' and 'Cantab'. Their bulbs were planted in the fall and as naturalizing bulbs, they'll continue to bloom each spring for years to come.

In bloom in the second week in April in the Walled Garden are tiny blue flowered Glory of the Snow. These are also fall planted naturalizing bulbs which you'll find under the columnar beeches on either side of the canal walkway.

In bloom in the third week in April in the Walled Garden is Euphorbia myrsinites or myrtle spurge. With spiraling evergreen grey green leaves and chartreuse flowers, this euphorbia gets a lot of attention from visitors.
