The central feature of the lower terrace of the Walled Garden is the ziggurat-shaped Persian Pool, which was once a swimming pool for the Samuel Untermyer family but is now a ruin. The Conservancy proposes to convert it into a shallow reflecting pool relined with elaborate mosaics to match the original design. Water will circulate in the pool year-round to prevent winter freezing, the initial cause of the mosaics’ damage.
Since 2016, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy has celebrated Mehregan, the ancient Persian harvest festival. Proceeds from the gala support our efforts to maintain the Persian Garden and restore the Persian Pool. The Persian Pool will be restored in 2022 at an estimated cost of $2 million.
Donors of $50,000 or more, including Mehregan supporters who make a commitment of $50,000 over three years (net of dinner costs), will be recognized on their own bronze plaque engraved with a Persian poem of their choosing that will be placed on top of the pool’s coping. This is a permanent and meaningful way to celebrate the Persian love of gardens and poetry in an American setting. Donors of $10,000 or more will be recognized on a communal bronze plaque beside the pool. Contributions for the Persian Pool may be made here. For information about making a gift, please contact Cathy Michelsen at cmichelsen@untermyergardens.org. View updates on our progress here.
We are grateful to the donors below for their leadership support of the Persian Pool Restoration Campaign.
