Trees of Untermyer Gardens with Stephen F. Byrns - July 17
Stephen Byrns, president of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, will offer a three part in-person tour of the trees at Untermyer Gardens Saturday, July 17 at 10AM. This is the third part.
Each walking tour will take about 60 minutes and will examine at least twenty trees. Specimens both old and young will be described, with information about structure, leaf, seeds and other unusual characteristics. The first part, on May 8, will take place in the Walled Garden and its forecourt. The second part, on June 12, will cover trees on the Lower Terrace down the Vista to the tulip grove and emerging meadow area. The third part will concentrate on the lowest part of the garden (Rhododendron Walk, Ruin Garden) up to the future stumpery, concluding at the Temple of Love and Rock and Stream Garden. Wear sturdy shoes and plan for walking down stairs and along wooded pathways.
Stephen F. Byrns founded the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy in 2011. A graduate of Princeton and Columbia Universities, Byrns was a founding partner of BKSK Architects, a successful architectural firm in New York City that was established in 1985. Byrns lived in Yonkers in the 1990’s, when he discovered Untermyer Park and Gardens. He revisited it in 2010 when told that the fountains had been turned on after decades of disuse. The more he learned about Samuel Untermyer’s garden, the more he was convinced that a conservancy should be established to work with the City of Yonkers to make it once again one of the greatest gardens in America.
