We always look forward to reporting on the past year’s accomplishments—and not just to toot our horn. It is a chance for us to thank the many, many friends whose support fuels our progress. By the end of this year, we will have welcomed at least 275,000 visitors, a staggering increase of more than 100,000 visitors over last year.

 | We’re particularly proud of the progress we’ve made in the area of education and community outreach. Our horticultural training internship program expanded to serve 28% more Yonkers public high school students. Our enhanced curriculum for grades K-12 has served 900 students this year, a number that will multiply next year when we build our first indoor classroom. Numbers may be powerful indicators, but our favorite marker of success is the joy we see on the faces of our visitors, our volunteers, our interns, and even our own gardeners. |

We are often asked, “How in the world can the Conservancy sustain the garden without charging admission or selling souvenirs or renting the space for luxurious private events? How can you stage the best holiday light show around and offer free cocoa without selling tickets?” Our response is that, at its core, this garden is a gift to everyone. Many visitors respond by giving as they are able out of gratitude for what they received—perhaps providing a little extra, knowing that not everyone can afford to give. Still, visitor donations provide just a small fraction of the support the garden needs to survive and thrive.
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, famously said “You have to find the intersection of doing something you’re passionate about and at the same time something that is in service of other people. I would argue that if you don’t find that intersection, you’re not going to be very happy in life.” Without a doubt, that intersection can be found at Untermyer Gardens.

Early this fall, more than 150 tree stumps were power washed and artfully arranged in the woods for our emerging Stumpery, giving dramatic shape to a years-long vision.
