Docent Orientations and Garden Greeter Open Houses
We welcome volunteers in our two main volunteer programs: Garden Docents and Garden Greeters.
If you'd like to join our wonderful group of garden volunteers we are hosting both new Docent Orientations and Garden Greeter Open Houses in March. Untermyer docents lead both public and private tours as well as gather together on a monthly basis to learn about the horticulture of the gardens. Garden Greeters are the friendly faces that you may have seen just inside the Walled Garden gate; they introduce visitors to the gardens as well as answer questions during their two hour shifts. Neither Docents nor Garden Greeters require a fixed schedule to volunteer - although you will sign up ahead of time for your shift - so they are both perfect for people with a busy or shifting calendar! We can't think of a more enjoyable way for your teenager to complete their high school's community service requirement than by helping people as a Garden Greeter on a few beautiful weekends.
Docent Orientations will take place on Thursday, March 12 at 6PM and Sunday, March 15 at 1PM in the Cola Center at Untermyer Gardens. You'll get to know new and current docents as well as learn about the gardens and get access to study materials. In April, docents will take a practice tour through the gardens led by Jessica our education and outreach coordinator. After that, new docents shadow experienced docents until they are comfortable with giving their own tours. If you love the gardens then this is a wonderful way to share it with visitors. Please email us if you plan on attending.
Garden Greeter Open Houses will take place on Thursday, March 19 at 6PM and Sunday, March 22 at 1PM in the Cola Center at Untermyer Gardens. You'll get to know new and current garden greeters as well as learn about the gardens and our garden greeter program. Garden Greeters introduce visitors to the gardens as well as answer questions during their two hour shifts on weekends. It is a great and relaxing way to share your love of the gardens with visitors. We welcome high school students doing their community service hours for school. Please email us if you plan on attending.
